Go, Dog. Go!

This is Oliver.

Oliver is 4 years old.

Oliver is learning to read.

Today I picked Go, Dog. Go! from our bookshelf to read to Oliver. We've had this book for years and never picked it up. (Oliver is in love with Mo Willems and all his books.) Oliver knows some of the alphabet but not all.

Oliver read Go, Dog. Go! I was so shocked. How is that? I read some and he read some with no problem. If he didn't know the word, he tried to figure it out on his own. He didn't ask for help, just looked at the pictures for clues to the words. I had never heard of this, but I'm just going to keep reading to him. Has anyone heard of this? Any tips?

Seems as though Oliver has found a book that he can use to work out his reading.

I've known young kids, like Oliver, who can read. Nothing odd about that. As for the Alphabet, it could be that he's picked up on words before fully memorizing the letter sounds. I'm no expert in reading (it took me long enough to learn how to do it growing up), but my guess is that it is best to just let him keep reading and reading with him.

Sounds like you've got a reader on your hands. Awesome!

Keep it repetitive and he will pay more attention to the words and less to the pictures as he catches on that he is saying the same thing over and over. Most adults who cannot read get clues from pictures. It is a natural and very common sense thing to do. Little Oliver has some smarts! You have to read No, David! This is another fun repetitive picture book he could handle, maybe even read to you! :D

Way 2 Go!

Thanks, Luke!

Our family loves No, David and it has been awhile since we've read it. I'm going to have him read that one to me also. Thanks for the suggestion!

Go Dog Go is magical :) Seriously.
I learned that in one of my children's literature classes.

Anyway, I just wanted to remind you that Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is this Saturday.
