Sunday Salon: 2009 Personal Challenge

As great as challenges are, there are many I won't be joining next year because of limited time. So instead I plan on having a personal challenge that includes no more than six challenges from the blogosphere. There are so many books I want to read and of course not enough time to read them.

I'm starting my personal challenge on Dec. 18, 2008 and it will run through Dec. 31, 2009. I know the dates are odd but the 18th is the last day of school for me and I plan on reading the second I walk out of class.

The plan: to read 150 books

6 in translation. (Lost in Translation challenge)
12 young adult novels (J. Kaye's Y.A. Challenge)
10 award winners (Book Award Challenge)
25 on my TBR bookshelf
100 short stories (100 shots of short story challenge)
The rest? Who cares?

I'm also participating in The Year of Readers Challenge that is hosted by Jodie. The challenge is a year-long read-a-thon in 2009 to raise money for literary charities through reading. Instead of asking people to donate money to me for my charities, First Book and 826 National, I'm going to personally donate $1.50 for each book I read. If I read 150 books I'll have donated a total of $225 by the end of the year. I plan on donating money at the end of each month instead of waiting until the end of the year. If you would like to join and help raise money, go over to the challenge. If not, why don't you support one of your fellow bloggers and donate money for a great cause?

I've been thinking about my challenges for next year, too - and I haven't even finished this year's! These sound like fun, and some of them I hadn't heard of before, so thanks for sharing. :)

In 2009, you are cutting back and I am cutting loose. ;) I'll be cutting back on accepting books to review. I found in 2008, I can't do both.

J. Kaye, I haven't even started reading my arcs yet!

Jessi, with so many challenges being talked about, you can't help but think about which ones to join. I can't wait to see what you join!

I learned a couple of years ago that challenges don't work for me. I'm one of those people who can't let a thing go without feeling guilty about it and so when it became apparent that I wasn't going to be able to complete them all I found it was affecting my enjoyment of what I was reading. However, I wish you well with your aims. Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

Good luck with your personal challenge! I still haven't made up my mind about which ones to join next year, but like you I want to avoid joining too many. Otherwise I know I'll end up feeling overwhelmed.

Table Talk: Thanks!

Nymeth: I know how you feel!

Good luck with your personal challenges. I joined up with five blog challenges, but decided to cut back on my reviews. Instead, I joined challenges and went through my TBR mountain and picked out books I've been dying to read for the longest time.

Enjoy!

Wow! That's awesome! I can't believe you have 3 kiddos at your young age and are teaching??? (Or going to school?)

Anyhow, I have a ton of books I want to read this next year. I just buying them and adding them to the pile. I think I'm addicted to book buying.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. However did you find me?

Wow, sounds like a great year of reading you have planned. I always want to participate in challenges but it's so hard for me to stick to a program when I'm always finding new things to read. :-)

Yvonne: I need you to teach me how to read books from my TBR pile. I just keeping add more books to it!

Marie: My trick is that I don't make a list. I only join challenges I don't have to make lists for.

Scobberlotcher: I hope you participate in some challenges!

Hi thanks for signing up for The Year of Readers and for posting about it! I'm so excited since seeing all the new publicity up and I checked out the link you sent me. Could you possibly e-mail me at bakerjodie@googlemail.com so that I can send you your sponsorship form?

I admire you for aiming so high. I haven't even thought yet about next year's challenges - I have completely gone off the rail as far as this year's are concerned and seem to have ended up reading all kinds, except the ones on my challenges... But yes, thanks for the interesting list

PS I'll add you to my blogroll: thanks for popping by on my site and alerting me to your existence!

I'm trying to cut down on challenges next year but we'll see how that goes. There always end up being so many tempting ones. Good luck with yours.
