Booking Through Thursday

We’ve all seen the lists, we’ve all thought, “I should really read that someday,” but for all of us, there are still books on “The List” that we haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Even though we know they’re fabulous. Even though we know that we’ll like them. Or that we’ll learn from them. Or just that they’re supposed to be worthy. We just … haven’t gotten around to them yet. What’s the best book that YOU haven’t read yet?

I'm going to limit my books to the ones on my bookshelves.

  1. The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck.
  2. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
  3. Beloved - Toni Morrison
  4. Sula - Toni Morrison
  5. The Year of Fog - Michelle Richmond
  6. The Gravedigger's Daughter - Joyce Carol Oates
  7. Loving Frank - Nancy Horan
  8. The Color Purple - Alice Walker
  9. Nights at the Circus - Angela Carter
  10. The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Have you read any of these books? What were your favorites? Which one should I read next?

Hmm, I've read a bunch of those: The Grapes of Wrath, Jane Eyre, Beloved, The Gravedigger's Daughter, and The Time Traveler's Wife. The Time Traveler's Wife was one of the best books I read last year, so I think you should read that one. It's amazing, and will probably make you cry, but in a good way :)

I haven't read any of those books yet, but like you, I've been meaning to read The Time Traveler's Wife and Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre, especially, after reading the Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde.

Jane Eyre is wonderful, but so are The Grapes of Wrath, Beloved, and Sula. Tough choices!

I've had The Time Travellers Wife on my shelves forever too!

I love Steinbeck!

I haven't read any of them. I am going to read The Color Purple this year for the Pulitzer Prize Challenge. And The Grapes of Wrath is on my list of possibles for the Steinbeck mini-challenge.

I gave up and never care to ever read Grapes of Wrath. All I can think of his Henry Fonda in a dustbowl.
Of these that I loved: Time Traveler's Wife.
Of these I look forward to someday: Nights at the Circus.

I've read a number of those books and a lot of them are really heavy... if you're wanting to get a quick start on tackling the list, I'd suggest starting with Loving Frank (the easiest of all of those to blitz through and still enjoy).

Here's my review.

What a great booking through thursday question...

I've read Jane Eyre, The Year of Fog and The Time Traveler's Wife from your list. Can definitely recommend those!

I loved The Time Travellers Wife. I think it is definitely one of the best books I have ever read and I still recommend today, two years after reading it. I also really enjoyed The Colour Purple many years ago.

I've read and loved The Grapes of Wrath, Beloved, Sula, Jane Eyre, The Color Purple and The Time Traveller's Wife.

I'd say go for Jane Eyre or The Time Traveller's Wife.

I read The Color Purple over 20 years ago but have not seen the movie. Read Time Traveller's Wife last year and loved it.

Kim, you are making me look bad! =) I've heard some great things about TTTW I'm going to have to read it soon!

Popin: I haven't read The Eyre Affair because I haven't Jane Eyre yet and both are on my shelves now!

Eveningreader: I know!

Nise: Niffenegger it is then!

Michelle: One more vote for NIffenegger!

Scrap girl: Another vote for Niffenegger!

Iliana: Thanks!

Thanks, Heather! I've heard some great things about Loving Frank!

Kylee: I'm reading those for the same reasons except I'm going to read The Color Purple for Book Awards Challenge.

Melissa: Steinbeck is the greatest.

Thanks, Bluestocking!

Care: I've heard great things about Nights at the Circus. I have Carter's Bloody Chamber on my shelves beside it, waiting to be read too.

Hey! I'm in Long Beach too! Anyhoo...I read The Color Purple 20 or whatever years ago, when it first came out. I really loved it!

Grapes of Wrath and Jane Eyre are both on my list. I almost included Toni Morrison's books on my list and I totally forgot about The Color Purple.

However, I have read both Year of Fog and Time Traveler's Wife. They're both good - I gave them a four - but they aren't the best books I've ever read.

Great list, though.

Definitely The Time Traveler's Wife. Personally, I think you can throw Beloved in the garbage. Had to read it for Am Lit II last year. yawn! I couldn't make it through and rented the movie version to get the gist of the book. The movie wasn't that great either.

But I loved Time Traveler!
