Joy

The last seven days have been so stressful for me with going to school full-time and dealing with my personal relationships. For some reason tonight I reached for one of my favorite books, Good Poems edited by Garrison Keillor. Good poems is an anthology of poetry from many poets like Anne Sexton and Raymond Carver to Ginger Andrews and Mary Oliver. It is one of the few books I own more than one copy of. "Welcome Morning" by Anne Sexton helps me to remember the little things that help lift my spirit throughout the day. Though I have read about four books this week I rather give you a poem.

Welcome Morning
Anne Sexton

There is joy
in all:
in the hair I brush each morning,
in the Cannon towel, newly washed,
that I rub my body with each morning,
in the chapel of eggs I cook
each morning,
in the outcry from the kettle
that heats my coffee
each morning,
in the spoon and the chair
that cry “hello there, Anne”
each morning,
in the godhead of the table
that I set my silver, plate, cup, upon
each morning.

All this is God,
right here in my pea-green house
each morning
and I mean,
though often forget,
to give thanks,
to faint down by the kitchen table
in a prayer of rejoicing
as the holy birds at the kitchen window
peck into their marriage of seeds.

So while I think of it,
let me paint a thank-you on my palm
for this God, this laughter of the morning,
lest it go unspoken.

The Joy that isn’t shared, I’ve heard,
dies young.

The Art of Graphic Novels

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art (1993)
Scott McCloud
216 pages
5/5
I should have read this book before starting my new obsession with graphic novels. I've learned so much about comics and art reading including: that comics started thousands of years ago, the differences between Western comics and comics from Japan, closure, and the importance of color and line. Though only 216 pages, it took me three days to read because there is so much information packed on each page. Well-written, funny, and very interesting, I'm going to have to read this book over and over again to learn everything Scott is explaining.

Bone Vols. 1-9 by Jeff Smith (1990-2003)
Winner of the 2005 Eisner Award for Best Reprint
5/5 rating
I read every single issue of this series in the last week. Bone is funny, witty, and addictive. Bone is about the three Bone cousins and their adventures in The Valley. They meet Grandma Ben and her granddaughter Thorn, Ms. Opossums and her babies, Lucius and so many others. They also run into rat creatures and a friendly dragon. The series is for kids and adults.

Fables Vols. 1-6 by Bill Willingham (2002-present)
Winner of 12 Eisner awards
5/5 rating
Fables is about what happens after happily ever after: Snow White and Prince Charming divorce after she caught him cheating, Beauty and the Beast are still together, and the big bad wolf is now a man. When an enemy called the Adversary destroys and kills everything in his path, the fables of old leave for America. They incorporate a city called Fabletown in modern-day New York and try to live as normal people. This series is not for kids with sexual humor and a lot of violence. Volumes one through six include Briar Rose's murder, Bluebeard's lust for death, getting revenge on the Adversary, and Snow White's pregnancy.
Fun Home - Alison Bechdel (2007)
232 pages
4 out of 5 rating
I can't say enough about this book, so I won't say too much. Fun Home is one of the newest addictions to the genre graphic novel/memoirs. Bechdel writes of growing up with her married father who is gay. Bechdel shows the reader her relationship with him and also her gradual coming out as a lesbian. A great story that's told with humor, thoughtfulness, and also a tinge of sadness.

the way it is now

I'll tell you
I've lived with some gorgeous women
and I was so bewitched by those
beautiful creatures that
my eyebrows twitched.

but I'd rather drive to New York
backwards
than to live with any of them
again.

the next classic stupidity
will be the history
of those fellows
who inherit my female
legacies.

in their case
as in mine
they will find
that madness
is caused by not
being often enough
alone.

Seven Songs (meme)

I saw this on Molly's site Restless Reader and had to do it. You have to name seven songs you are really enjoying right now.

1. Move you Feet - Junior Senior. I haven't heard this song in years until I saw some commercial with this song on it. This is such a great song to give you a burst of energy in the morning.

2. When I grow up - Pussycat Dolls. It's a typical pop song, but I do have to agree with it. Nowadays with myspace and youtube, so many people want to be famous more than anything else.

3. Forever - Chris Brown. What can I say? My girls and I love this song.

4. Live with Me - Massive Attack. I saw this video and just fell in love with the song. If you don't listen to any other song on this list, listen to this one.

5. I feel it all -Feist. I love this song and the album (The Reminder.) There are songs for every emotion.

6. Boyz - M.I.A. Just listen to it..

7. Paper Planes - M.I.A. I play this song the second I walk out the house.

Booking through Thursday

It’s a holiday weekend here in the U.S., so let’s keep today’s question simple–What are you reading? Anything special? Any particularly juicy summer reading?

Today I finished Scott McCloud's informative, funny, and spell-binding Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. I had so much fun reading this book. I just started reading graphic novels last year and have been slowly but surely trying to read every one that I can get my hands on. Though only 213 pages, it took me three days to read it. There was so much information to absorb. After reading Understanding Comics, I want to re-read every graphic novel I've read over again.

Be of love

be of love (a little) more careful
than of everything
guard her perhaps only
A trifle less (merely beyond how very)
closely than nothing
remember love by frequent
anguish (imagine
her least never with most
memory)
give entirely each
forever its freedom

(dare until a flower,
understanding ceaselessly sunlight
open what thousandth why and
discover laughing)

- e. e. cummings, be of love (a little)
